Asteroid Day India, In February 2014, Brian May, Astrophysicist and famous guitarist of the rock band “Queen”, he began working with Grigorij Richters, the director of a new film titled 51 Degrees North, a fictional story of an asteroid impact in London and condition resulting human. May composed music for the film and suggested that it projected in Starmus Richters, an event organized by Dr. Garik Israelian and attended by astrophysicists, scientists and artists, including Dr. Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins and Rick Wakeman. The result was the beginning of discussions that would lead to the launch of Asteroid Day in 2015. Through subsequent discussions with all players, he was born the concept of a day dedicated to the awareness of asteroids around the world. Now, Richters needed to "make it happen".

Asteroid Day takes place annually on June 30. It is a global awareness campaign where people from around the world come together to learn about asteroids, the impact hazard they may pose, and what we can do to protect our planet, families, communities, and future generations from future asteroid impacts. Asteroid Day is held each year on the anniversary of the largest impact in recent history, the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia. A relatively small asteroid, about 40 meters across or the size of a modest office building, devastated an unpopulated area about the size of a major metropolitan city. Regionally organised large and small events are held on Asteroid Day, and range from lectures and other educational programmes to live concerts and broader community events, to raise public awareness of the need for increased detection and tracking of asteroids.

The 100x Asteroid Declaration, calling for this action, has been signed by hundreds of astronauts, scientists, artists and leaders in business and technology as well as thousands of private citizens. Employing existing and new technology to detect and track asteroids and demonstrating deflection capabilities to prevent future asteroid impacts could be humanity’s greatest achievement.

SPACE India is the official Coordinator for India Region of Asteroid Day and will celebrate and represent Asteroid Day India.

Together, Asteroid Day and SPACE India, want to raise public and community awareness. We request you to join us in the phenomenal event to help in passing this important information to each and every Indian citizen.

All the Schools, Universities and individual participants are encouraged to participate in the global awareness campaign with SPACE India.

LEARN ABOUT ASTEROIDS THROUGH ART In this short activity, participants learn about the characteristics and location of asteroids and build their own model asteroid using clay. Go to the Exercise MAKE YOUR OWN ASTEROID & EARTH Print your own asteroid and globe! Build your own little models of the Earth and of an asteroid. Created by NEOShield-2 Go to the Exercise PRINT ASTEROID EROS Emily Peters made this wonderful model of asteroid 433 Eros. You can download the file. A great exercise for any classroom. EXPLORATION IS NEAR This activity book is designed to provide you with a number of fun activities to teach children about asteroids and some of the science concepts involved in the NEAR mission. Download the File ASTEROIDS & LUNAR LANDSCAPES In this 30 to 45 minute activity, students (in teams of 4-5) experiment to create craters and learn about the landscape of the moon. The students make observations on how the size and mass, direction, and velocity of the projectile impacts the size and shape of the crater. Go to the Exercise

Guidelines for National Asteroid Documentary Competition

☄️THEME: “Asteroid and Us” Earth’s natural resources are limited and are already under pressure looking at the growing population. Hence, looking at space as a resource is an innovative idea to meet the needs of the current population. Mining space resources, especially asteroids, is an efficient way to cover our demands. Mining space resources can also open doors to set up space stations in near earth orbits allowing more space expeditions to be possible. This can also lead to reduced cost of space travel since resources that are needed to be carried from earth could find an alternative. Ammonia, nitrogen and other useful gases have been detected in space and can be used for sustaining life in space. They can also be applied to technology used in space.
  1. Shoot an “Asteroid and Us” themed based documentary.
  2. In the documentary participants have to cover the following areas like the role of Asteroids in the formation of our universe, how we can use their resources, how asteroids can pave the way for future exploration and finally how we can protect our planet from asteroid impacts.
  3. Any scientific aids or models can be used to explain the contributions.
  4. The mode of explaining the theme can be demonstration, presentation, interaction or interview.
  5. The maximum duration of video should be 3 minutes. Any video exceed the duration mentioned will not be accepted.
For example -
  1. Interacting or interviewing a group of people on the aforementioned theme.
  2. One can also shoot a video on the theme “Asteroid & Us” in which all the possible discussion related to Asteroids can be done.
☄️Registration Post on online platforms (Facebook), keeping Privacy Settings as Public, by tagging @SPACEIndiaEdu, @AsteroidDayIndia and using hashtags  #SPACEIndia, #AsteroidAndUs, #AsteroidDayIndia. Registration will start from 12th June 2019 and last date of Registration is 22nd June 2019 Link to register: Click Here    ☄️PARTICIPATION This competition is open for all. Participants can take part in this campaign as an individual or as a team with maximum 5 members. CATEGORIES FOR PARTICIPATION The entries will be judged on two categories i.e.
  1. Age group 14 and below
  2. Age group 15 and above
  ☄️Documentary Criteria:
  1. The format of the documentary should be .mpeg, .mov, .avi, .mp4, etc.
  2. The duration of the video must not exceed from 2 to 3 Minutes.
  3. The documentary can be shot using a webcam, phone video recorder, video camcorders, digital cameras and DSLR and Audio needs to be clear and audible. Professional studio assistance is NOT allowed.
  4. Common and easily available software can be used for basic level of editing. Editing NOT compulsory.
☄️Result Announcement: The result will be announced based on the following criteria:
  1. The documentary will be judged based on the originality of the idea, science content, clarity of the concept and its delivery along with usage of aids.
  2. Proper use of hashtags mentioned in the above guidelines.
  3. Sum of total number of likes and shares on the documentary will be counted.
☄️Felicitations The winner’s documentary will be screened on the Asteroid day.   ☄️IMPORTANT NOTE: By submitting your documentary, you are promising that you own all rights to all material in it, including the music, images, script, and rights to include all persons, places or organizations included or depicted. 100x Asteroid Declaration is an aspirational goal. Current asteroid survey projects are finding about 1500 asteroids per year that can come near the Earth. It is not likely that we will detect 100 times this number of asteroids per year with our current capabilities. More than 1M asteroids have the potential to impact Earth and through all the available telescopes worldwide, we have discovered only about one percent. The 100X Declaration calls for increasing the asteroid discovery rate to 100,000 (or 100x) per year within the next 10 years. “The more we learn about asteroid impacts, the clearer it became that the human race has been living on borrowed time,” remarked Brian May. “Asteroid Day and the 100X Declaration are ways for the public to contribute to an awareness of the Earth’s vulnerability and the realization that Asteroids hit Earth all the time.” Asteroid Day would the vehicle to garner public support to increase our knowledge of when asteroids might strike and how we can protect ourselves.” The 100X Declaration has been signed by more than 22,000 private citizens.
