Life Journey
Born into a modest home, Kalam’s mother was a housewife and his father owned a boat. They taught him the importance of honesty and hard work. Young Kalam was adamant about continuing his studies even in the face of financial hardship. He obtained a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology after graduating with a degree in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli. His curiosity and love of learning were hallmarks of his educational path, and they served as the basis for his subsequent inventions.

APJ Abdul Kalam served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007, and was known as the “People’s President” for his focus on youth empowerment and education. Dr. Kalam was also a prolific writer, authoring several books that inspire and motivate. His work reflected his thoughts on dreams, aspirations, and the responsibilities of the youth. “Wings of Fire” and “India 2020,” inspired millions with his vision for a developed India. His numerous accolades include the Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, solidifying his legacy as a visionary leader and a source of inspiration for generations to come.
Meet with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam:
In 2006, a group of selected students from Space India had the extraordinary opportunity to meet with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, after completing the remarkable “Heliodyssey” expedition. This scientific journey was organized by Space India with the unique goal of observing a solar eclipse from three different perspectives—air, water, and land.
The students, brimming with excitement, presented their findings to Dr. Kalam during a fascinating discussion. They showcased not only their scientific insights but also captivating photographs of the eclipse captured through all three mediums.
Pioneering Innovations in Indian Space and Defense
With his 1960 recruitment to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Dr. Kalam’s career took off. His contribution to the development of SLV-3, India’s first satellite launch vehicle, which put the Rohini satellite into orbit in 1980, was a major milestone, just as his contributions to India’s Defense Technology were highly noteworthy. Serving as the Prime Minister’s Chief Scientific Advisor, he played a crucial role in India’s 1998 nuclear tests, which solidified India’s position as a powerful nuclear state.
The Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) was one of the ground-breaking undertakings that resulted from Dr. Kalam’s vision of an independent India. In addition to strengthening India’s defense capabilities, his work on the development of missiles like Agni and Prithvi inspired a new generation of scientists and engineers.

Despite all of his accomplishments, he maintained his modesty and consistently gave credit to his mentors’ advice and the teamwork for his success.
