The Moon: A Brief Overview
Earth’s only natural satellite, Moon has a diameter of about 3,474 kilometers and orbits our planet at an average distance of 384,400 kilometers. Its surface is characterized by vast plains known as maria, rugged highlands, and countless craters formed by meteorite impacts. The Moon’s thin atmosphere (exosphere) means that its surface is exposed to the vacuum of space, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high levels of radiation.
