Cosmos is an enormous expanse of space and time that is full of mysteries that both intrigue and perplex us while, the universe is full of occurrences, from the tiniest particles to the biggest galaxies, that defy our comprehension and pique our interest.
At Space India, through Space Explorers Workshop “Fingerprints of Universe”, Students are taught to experiment rather than just believe in facts. Astronomers understand what the universe is made of by studying the light coming from the celestial bodies. They achieve this using a measurement technique called ‘spectroscopy’. They experiment and learn that light is a combination of seven colors. They further explore that each spectrum tells a story and It is unique to the object and can give a wide range of information. They then relate this to how astronomers discover mind-boggling facts about objects in the universe using spectroscopy.
Let’s take a tour through some of the most astounding wonders of the cosmos as we investigate cosmic riddles.
The nature of dark matter and dark energy is one of cosmology’s most puzzling riddles. The bulk of the mass and energy in the universe is composed of these elusive substances, which are unseen and imperceptible to ordinary instruments. To explain their existence, scientists have put up a variety of theories, from modifications of Einstein’s theory of gravity to the presence of exotic particles. Decoding the codes of dark matter and dark energy could transform our knowledge of the universe and provide answers to basic queries about its composition and development.
Black holes are another cosmic mystery that has baffled astronomers for many years. These monsters of gravity are made of the remains of huge stars and have gravitational fields so strong that light cannot escape them. The universe is a stage for breathtaking displays of cosmic fireworks, ranging from the eerie dance of pulsars to the explosive collisions of faraway galaxies. The echoes of catastrophic events like the mergers of black holes and neutron stars are carried by gravitational waves, which are ripples in space-time that give astronomers a new tool to study the most extreme processes in the universe.
Nevertheless, despite all the unanswered questions, there is a deep beauty in our pursuit of cosmic understanding. With every new finding and observation, we get closer to understanding the complex fabric of the universe. Humanity’s path of cosmic discovery, whether by telescope viewing or theoretical physics investigation, is a monument to our unquenchable curiosity and limitless creativity.
