On 19th January 2024, SPACE India hosted Space and Astronomy showcase at the “Science Through Games & Toys” venue at the India International Science Festival (IISF), which took place at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) – Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) campus in Faridabad, Haryana.
The India International Science Fair (IISF) is a place where curiosity ignites, and this year, we were fortunate to be a part of it. Our team set out to share our fascination with the cosmos, and the response was nothing short of electrifying! We gathered over 2000 eager minds, from wide-eyed children to seasoned science enthusiasts, and embarked on a thrilling journey through the mysteries of the universe.
Our adventure began with the fundamentals: rockets and space rocks. We demystified the science behind these celestial marvels, explaining how rockets defy gravity and propel themselves into the inky blackness, while asteroids and meteoroids leave their fiery trails across the cosmic canvas. The audience’s faces lit up with wonder as we unveiled the secrets of these celestial bodies, sparking a flurry of curious questions.
We then turned our attention to comets, those icy wanderers that leave breathtaking trails of dust and gas in their wake. We explained their formation in the far reaches of the solar system and their potential impact on Earth. The audience was captivated by the stories of these celestial travellers, their eyes widening at the thought of these cosmic snowballs hurtling through space.
But our journey wasn’t just about passive observation. We wanted to ignite the flames of curiosity and inspire hands-on exploration. That’s where hydro rocketry came in! We demonstrated the science behind this exciting activity, explaining how the pressure of water can propel a simple bottle skyward. The best part? The audience got to participate! With eager hands and excited shouts, they launched their own mini-rockets, experiencing the thrill of scientific discovery firsthand.
As the IISF drew to a close, we were overwhelmed by the positive response. The sparkle in the eyes of those 2000+ individuals, their thirst for knowledge, and their newfound appreciation for the wonders of the universe – that’s what made it all worthwhile. We planted seeds of curiosity that, we hope, will blossom into a lifelong love for science and exploration.
