In an exciting development for India’s space program, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has finalized two astronauts for a groundbreaking mission to the International Space Station (ISS) this year. This mission, a collaboration with NASA, is scheduled for no earlier than October 2024. While India’s own human spaceflight mission using an Indian launch vehicle, Gaganyaan, is targeted for 2025, this joint project with NASA provides valuable experience. The chosen astronauts will undergo specialized training in the United States on ISS operations, complementing their Gaganyaan training in India.
At Space India, Space Explorers Workshops are specialized astronomy and space science theme-based workshops that are age-group-specific and can be conducted at schools, educational institutes, and resident welfare associations, i.e., for people from all walks of life. We make complex concepts easy to understand and make Rocket Science easy. The workshops are fun exercises emphasizing group activities and enabling students to participate in an informal setting.
This mission is part of Axiom-4, NASA’s fourth private astronaut mission with Axiom Space. It will involve a two-week docking (process of connecting one spacecraft to another) with the ISS, with transportation provided by SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. The astronauts will receive comprehensive training on Dragon systems, procedures, and emergency protocols. This collaborative mission signifies India’s growing role in international space exploration. It’s a crucial stepping stone towards ISRO’s independent Gaganyaan mission to demonstrate human spaceflight capability.
Gaganyaan Mission – A National Dream
The four astronaut candidates for Gaganyaan were revealed in February 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These Indian Air Force pilots – Group Captains Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubanshu Shukla – are undergoing rigorous training for India’s historic human spaceflight mission. The Gaganyaan program aims to demonstrate India’s capability for human spaceflight to low-earth orbit using an indigenously developed launch ’vehicle.
Partnership with Axiom Space
Axiom Space is a Houston-based company leading the way in private space exploration. Founded in 2016, they’re developing infrastructure for space. It is the fourth such mission by Axiom Space and this mission is a significant step in NASA’s plan to transition low Earth orbit (LEO) from a government-led activity to a commercial one. It will pave the way for Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station, to succeed the ISS.
NASA selected Axiom Space in March 2023 for their third private astronaut mission. This strategy aims to provide cost-effective services for the agency while it concentrates on its deep space Artemis missions, still utilizing LEO for astronaut training and groundwork for future lunar and Martian exploration.
In conclusion, with this joint mission on the horizon, the future of Indian space exploration looks bright. This is a stepping stone towards India’s self-reliance in space exploration, while also signifying the country’s growing prominence on the international stage of space research and collaboration. The nation eagerly anticipates the success of this mission and its contribution to ISRO’s ambitious Gaganyaan program.
