World Space Week (WSW) is an annual international celebration of science and technology and their contribution to the betterment of humankind. Held every year from October 4th to 10th, this event commemorates two significant milestones in space history: the launch of Sputnik 1, the first human-made satellite, on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967.
The theme for World Space Week 2024 this year was “Space and Climate Change,” a powerful topic that highlights the critical role space exploration plays in understanding and combating the impacts of climate change on Earth. This theme encourages people across the globe to reflect on how satellite technology, space research, and innovative approaches can provide vital data and solutions to address environmental challenges.

Why Celebrate World Space Week?
World Space Week is celebrated to raise awareness about the benefits of space exploration and to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It also fosters international collaboration and brings communities together to learn about the importance of space and its potential to solve global problems. Schools, universities, research institutions, and space organizations around the world participate in the week-long event with educational activities, model exhibitions, space talks, and more.
World Space Week 2024 at SPACE INDIA
Cosmic Mind Forum:
At Space India, we embraced the theme ‘Space and Climate Change’ by organizing various interactive events for students and space enthusiasts. The highlight of our celebrations was the Cosmic Mind Forum, which focused on discussing the potential of space technologies in addressing climate challenges. Students from different schools participated in competitions, online forums, and discussions, contributing their ideas on how space data can be harnessed to track climate patterns, deforestation, and pollution.

IIST Fest – Astrocarnival:
From 3rd October to 6th October 2024, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), located in Thiruvananthapuram, hosted Conscientia 2K24 – Astral Armageddon, a technical fest organized by the students of IIST. Space India, in a paid collaboration with IIST, hosted “Astro Carnival” where various activities were conducted like Virtual Reality – Mission ISS, Handling Telescopes, Constellation puzzle, Astrophotography Display, Ring your planet, Quiz, and Tattoo Booth.

Attendees at the carnival enjoyed immensely and gained an appreciation for Astronomy. The day’s chief guest, Justice Shri Devan Ramachandran, the honourable judge of the High Court of Kerala, attended the VR exhibition with his family and enjoyed the experience tremendously. He informed me that experience of the International Space Station through VR is a must-have.
Shiv Nadar School – DLF City Phase I Gurugram:

On 9th October 2024, SPACE India organized a special event at Shiv Nadar School, DLF City, Gurugram, in celebration of World Space Week 2024. The event aimed to engage Grade 5 students in understanding the significance and history of World Space Week, highlighting its global importance. A series of hands-on activities were conducted to deepen their interest in space science, including rocketry demonstrations, comet-making workshops, and solar observation sessions. These interactive experiences provided students with a unique opportunity to explore key astronomical concepts in a practical and engaging manner.
American Centre Workshop:
An astronomy workshop was held at the Space Office in Sector 11 Dwarka, organized by Space India in collaboration with the American Centre, on September 30th, 2024. The workshop aimed to educate students about safe solar observation techniques, a crucial skill for budding astronomers and science enthusiasts. The workshop began with a presentation by a knowledgeable space astronomer, who provided insights into the features of the Sun and the importance of safe solar viewing methods.

Participants learned to use various solar observation equipment, including solar filters, pinhole projectors, and specially designed telescopes, to observe solar features like sunspots. The workshop also highlighted the importance of safety, reinforcing the importance of using certified solar filters and proper equipment. The event was weather-dependent, with alternative activities planned for cloud cover. The ultimate goal was to ignite a passion for astronomy and a profound appreciation for the Sun, aiming to cultivate a new generation of informed astronomers who can responsibly engage with the wonders of our solar system.
Additionally, we hosted a range of workshops, model-making competitions, and space entrepreneurship seminars. Each event was designed to engage students with the wonders of space while highlighting the importance of space science in protecting our planet.
Looking Ahead World Space Week reminds us how interconnected space exploration and environmental stewardship truly are. By looking to the skies, we can find solutions to challenges here on Earth. As technology continues to evolve, the use of space-based tools will remain a critical part of the global effort to mitigate climate change.
