What Is the Equinox on Saturn?
The term equinox might sound familiar. On our planet, equinoxes occur twice a year when the Sun is directly above the equator, resulting in nearly equal day and night lengths. On Saturn, the equinox occurs approximately every 15 Earth years when the planet’s rings align edge-on with the Sun.
During this alignment, sunlight strikes the rings at such an angle that they appear as a thin line when viewed from Earth. Because Saturn’s rings are incredibly thin—only about 30 feet thick despite spanning over 270,000 kilometres in diameter—they virtually disappear from our perspective.

This phenomenon occurs because, from our vantage point on Earth, the rings will be seen edge-on.
