The spirit of National Space Day came alive at Thiruvanmiyur Beach, Chennai, as the SPACE Chennai Team conducted a public Night Sky Observation on 23 August 2026. The programme was organized to celebrate National Space Day and to create awareness among the public about astronomy, space science, and India’s remarkable journey in science, technology, innovation, and space exploration.

The event began with the kind cooperation and permission of the local police authorities, who supported the team in conducting the observation session at the beach. As the telescope was set up, it immediately attracted the attention of people passing by. Curious visitors gathered around, eager to know what was happening. This provided the SPACE Chennai Team with an excellent opportunity to interact with the public and explain the significance of National Space Day, while also sharing the achievements of India in the fields of science, technology, innovation, and space exploration.
What started as a simple telescope setup soon became a source of excitement and curiosity. People began waiting patiently for their opportunity to look through the telescope and experience the night sky for themselves. The growing crowd reflected the natural curiosity people have about the universe and demonstrated how direct astronomical experiences can inspire an interest in science.
The observation was initially affected by cloud cover, which made it difficult to observe the sky as planned. Despite the change in conditions and the delay in the observation schedule, the public remained enthusiastic and continued to wait. Their patience was eventually rewarded when the clouds cleared enough for the team to observe two prominent celestial objects—the Moon and Venus.

Around 100 people had the opportunity to observe these celestial bodies through the telescope. For many participants, seeing the Moon and Venus through a telescope was an exciting and memorable experience. People from different age groups gathered together, shared their excitement, and developed a greater appreciation for the night sky.
Beyond simply observing celestial objects, the programme served as an important public outreach initiative. The interaction with the public helped communicate the importance of National Space Day and encouraged people to look beyond the Earth and develop an interest in astronomy and space exploration. The curiosity sparked by the telescope became a small but meaningful seed of scientific curiosity among the public.
The National Space Day Night Sky Observation at Thiruvanmiyur Beach successfully brought astronomy closer to the community. Despite the challenging cloud conditions and changes to the observation schedule, the enthusiasm of the public remained strong until the very end. The smiles, questions, and excitement of the participants demonstrated the power of direct scientific experiences in inspiring curiosity.
